This morning we woke up well before sunrise and hiked up the mountain to Motigo. The hike up was crisp and cold and the stars beautiful. The view from up top was amazing as we saw dawn break on the horizon.
It's been a fun weekend. Yesterday we visited a local tea factory. As you're probably aware from earlier posts, tea (Chai) is a big deal here. Not only is it the local drink of choice, but it's a profitable cash crop as well and is known in this area as "black gold."
Here is a tea field. The tea is grown by local farmers and then sold to the factories for processing. We got to see how the tea gets from here. . . . . . . .
to here. . . . .
to here. . . . . .
and finally to here, the place where we all like it.It was pretty cool to visit the factory and see how the process goes. It's all natural with no additives, chemicals or preservatives. Despite being a pretty advanced factory, the entire operation, heat, power and all is powered by a large boiler, fueled by wood from these two workers. They work 8 hr. shifts, constantly throwing wood into the boiler for about $10 a day. Talk about some hard work!!
