The old adage is true. Being in a 3rd world country, even in a relatively advanced area like Tenwek, reminds me of just how much we take for granted on any given day. Most of these people have nothing. They work for less than $5 a day and most are trying to support their families and put kids through private schools. Nobody has a new car, clean clothes or shoes that fit. But, they're genuinely happy in their circumstances. . . . .something that Americans often aren't. It's a great reminder that contentment doesn't come from material possessions or circumstances but rather relationships and purposeful living. That's where you find real joy.
These men are some of the OR staff. Shane Brasher of Biomet Orthopedics made a generous donation to my trip by providing several surgical caps and pairs of protective eye wear. These are some OR essentials that Tenwek isn't able to afford to they depend on visitors to bring them over. After working with these guys for a few days, I handed them Shane's bag full of goodies. You would've thought that I gave them a brick of gold! There were like kids in a candy store, rummaging through the bag searching for just the right hat for them! It was priceless. The smiles on their faces were truly thankful. I hinted that I'd like to take a picture of them with their new hats and glasses and they scurried about trying to put their garb on in time to make the pic. It was great. So thanks to Shane and Biomet for making these guys' days and for making me and instant hit amongst the staff!!
